During his thesis, our new doctor in Bioethics addressed ethical problems in the ultra-processed food industry, questioned commercial practices and promoted public health awareness.
On November 7, 2023 at the Postgraduate Studies Center of the North Campus, Gustavo Pérez Berlanga defended his thesis: “The application of global bioethical principles in the commercial determinants of health in the ultra-processed food and sugary beverage industry ”, work that was approved with honorable mention.
During the exam, Dr. Juan Manuel Palomares Cantero, ethics coordinator at the DAFI and former general coordinator of the School of Bioethics of the Universidad Anáhuac México, shared the reflection, “Following the white rabbit and questioning to the food industry”:
“In the world of academia, we rarely encounter individuals whose commitment and courage lead them to explore topics that challenge established norms and call into question fundamental issues of our society. Today I want to pay tribute to one of those brave men, Gustavo Pérez Berlanga, whose doctoral thesis in Bioethics has left a deep impression on the academic community and beyond. His research is a testament to his dedication and passion for addressing complex and current problems. Through years of study, research and reflection, he has charted a path that few would dare to travel.
We cannot overlook the personal sacrifice that Gustavo has made to carry out this research, since he has invested time and energy like any thesis student. Many times, sacrificing their family life and professional career. Without a doubt, your courage in facing challenges and difficulties deserves our deepest respect, and I extend this congratulations to Érika, Tania and Cassandra, who have left part of their influence on this work.”.
It should be noted that Pérez Berlanga's thesis has significantly impacted the academic community and society in general, shedding light on the ethical and bioethical problems surrounding the ultra-processed food and sugary beverage industry, challenging commercial practices and promoting awareness. on public health.
The importance of Bioethics in this topic lies in the fact that it offers an answer, a solution and a proposal to the problem that Pérez Berlanga addresses in his research.
This science provides the ethical framework necessary to evaluate the practices of the food industry and its impact on the health of the population, and allows us to question established norms and analyze the ethical implications of business decisions that affect millions of people around the world.
It should also be mentioned that Gustavo in his academic journey discovered a complex world of ethics and food and was not afraid to pursue what he did not fully master or know. He ventured into the land of global Bioethics and commercial determinants of health, challenging established conventions and exploring uncharted academic territory.
Without a doubt, Gustavo's work is an example of courage and commitment in academic research, the reflection of which in his doctoral thesis has left an indelible mark on the field, reminding us that sometimes we must follow the white rabbit and venture into the unknown to discover what really matters.
