Dr. Francisco Güell speaks to Health Sciences students about assisted reproduction.

Dr. Francisco Güell Pelayo

The renowned bioethics researcher presented the advances and challenges that exist in this type of reproduction.

On March 10, 2025, Anáhuac University Mexico North Campus was the setting for a presentation by Dr. Francisco Güell Pelayo, a renowned researcher in bioethics and assisted reproduction, who spoke about "Fertility of the Future: Advances, Bioethics and Challenges in Assisted Reproduction" before more than 1,000 students from the School of Health Sciences, who received key information on assisted reproduction techniques, their impact on health and medical knowledge.

Dr. Güell Pelayo is a prominent academic and researcher in the fields of bioethics, assisted reproduction, and the philosophy of biology. He holds a PhD in Philosophy and Literature from the University of Navarra and a degree in Biological Sciences. He is currently participating in the B2-InF (Be Better Informed About Fertility) project, a European initiative that seeks to improve information and awareness about Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) by analyzing young people's perceptions of fertility and assisted reproduction.

With extensive experience in bioethical research, he has participated in various international projects and published specialized works on the ethical impact of assisted reproduction, embryonic manipulation, and philosophical dilemmas regarding biology and genetics.

Access to up-to-date information on assisted reproduction techniques is essential for the training of future healthcare professionals. During the presentation, the researcher analyzed the role of ART and its impact on society, highlighting the importance of a scientific, ethical, and bioethical approach to these procedures.

In a context where infertility affects millions of couples worldwide, knowledge about the evolution of ART allows students to understand the medical, legal, and ethical challenges these techniques entail. He also emphasized the need for future physicians to have a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective that allows them to offer informed and ethically responsible solutions to their patients.

Dr. Güell Pelayo also presented the latest innovations in assisted reproduction, including new in vitro fertilization techniques, advances in gene editing, and fertility preservation. He also addressed associated bioethical dilemmas, such as embryo manipulation, equitable access to these treatments, and the emotional impact on patients.

He also emphasized the risks and illnesses associated with ART, stressing the importance of both physicians and patients being properly informed. Among the potential adverse effects, he mentioned obstetric complications, multiple pregnancies, the risk of premature births, and genetic alterations, as well as the psychological and emotional effects that people undergoing these treatments may experience, both due to the high expectations and the potential for procedural failure.

The B2-InF project, in which Dr. Güell Pelayo is a researcher, was a key reference in the discussion. This European initiative has generated valuable information to improve communication between reproductive medicine and society, allowing scientific advances in assisted reproduction to be understood in their ethical and social dimensions.

Bioethics plays a crucial role in assisted reproduction, as it allows for the evaluation of the ethical and social implications of these techniques. The presentation emphasized that reproductive medicine should focus not only on technological innovation, but also on patient well-being, respect for human dignity, and the responsible regulation of these practices.

Events such as "Fertility of the Future" reinforce Anáhuac University Mexico's commitment to comprehensive medical education, providing its students with access to cutting-edge information and promoting critical thinking about scientific advances and their impact on society.

Training physicians with an ethical and up-to-date approach to assisted reproduction is essential to ensure that future generations of healthcare professionals have the necessary knowledge to care for their patients effectively and humanely. These types of academic spaces continue to strengthen Anáhuac's leadership in the teaching of bioethics and reproductive medicine in Mexico and Latin America.

It is important to note that this presentation was coordinated by Dr. José Antonio Bonilla Castillo, coordinator of the Bioethics Department in the Bachelor's program and in charge of outreach to the School of Bioethics; Dr. Salvador Bueno Valenzuela, director of the School of Health Sciences; and Dr. José Alberto Castilla Barajas, director of the School of Bioethics.
