Dr. Margarita Otero gives a lecture on bioethics and palliative care at the ANMB

The specialist reflected on the ethical challenges in the care of patients with chronic-degenerative diseases, highlighting the importance of palliative care and its humanized approach in medical care.

On January 31, 2025, Dr. Margarita Otero Lamas, an expert in bioethics and palliative care, gave a lecture entitled “Bioethics, palliative care and chronic-degenerative diseases” in a space organized by the Mexican National Academy of Bioethics (ANMB) and which brought together health professionals, academics and students interested in the ethical analysis of current challenges in health care.

During her speech, the academic from our School of Bioethics stressed the importance of applying bioethical principles in addressing chronic degenerative diseases, which represent a growing challenge for health systems due to their high prevalence and the impact they generate on the quality of life of patients.

The expert also stressed the need for an interdisciplinary approach involving doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers to provide comprehensive support to patients and their families. She also highlighted the importance of raising awareness in society about the right to adequate palliative care, with special emphasis on respect for the autonomy and dignity of people. In this regard, she stressed the importance of promoting public policies that guarantee access to these services and promote humanized care in the health field.

The School of Bioethics congratulates Dr. Otero Lamas for her outstanding participation and valuable contribution to the bioethical analysis of one of the most urgent issues in the health field, which provided an enriching space for reflection and dialogue among attendees, who agreed on the importance of continuing to promote training and research in bioethics to respond to the challenges posed by the aging of the population and the increasing incidence of chronic diseases.
