This qualitative research uses a methodology of literature review, analysis and phenomenological analysis. Currently, there are reports of non-prescribed use, by healthy people, of drugs for the treatment of cognitive ailments. Such intake has been carried out for the purpose of enhancing specific cognitive abilities such as memory, concentration and reaction capacity. This non-recommended use of drugs has been documented through a series of research and surveys that find an upward trend in the consumption of these drugs, especially in specific sectors of the population, such as university students in developed countries. The potentiating character of these drugs when consumed by healthy people leads to the need to contrast their use with the bioethical principle of totality or “therapeutic”.

Clinical bioethics has evolved in the affirmation of the fundamental general principles that protect people’s health. The management and relief of pain is a universally recognized human right, susceptible to ethical and bioethical scrutiny, since it involves making decisions that compromise people’s quality of life. The ethical dilemma of pain management often involves conflicts of values in crucial decisions, especially when there is no single alternative, treatment and intervention strategies that are sufficiently shared and accepted. The ethical and bioethical problem in pain management, especially in patients with chronic conditions and/or stress, at the end of life continues to represent a challenge for clinical practice, with diverse consequences in adult patients and repercussions in health systems and the family and social environment of these patients.
