This BINCA session explored the bioethical dilemmas that emerge with the increasing implementation of AI in medicine, based on bioethical principlism and personalism.
On February 19, 2025, Dr. María Elizabeth de los Ríos led an outstanding session titled "Bioethics and Artificial Intelligence", where she addressed the challenges and opportunities presented by the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the health sciences from a bioethical perspective.
Dr. de los Ríos began her presentation with a historical overview of the development of artificial intelligence, contextualizing its evolution and progressive integration into various scientific fields. She then focused on the significant impact AI has had on the health sciences, exploring its current applications in medicine, such as algorithm-assisted diagnostics, personalized treatment planning, and remote patient monitoring.
The core analysis of the session centered on the bioethical dilemmas emerging from the increasing implementation of AI in medicine. Based on bioethical principlism and personalism, Dr. de los Ríos discussed four key issues:
Algorithmic Bias: The session examined how algorithms can perpetuate or even amplify existing biases in the data they are trained on, affecting fairness in medical diagnoses and treatments.
Deconstruction of the Doctor-Patient Relationship: Dr. de los Ríos highlighted how technological mediation could impact direct interaction between doctors and patients, potentially compromising empathy and shared decision-making.
Attribution of Responsibility: The presentation raised questions about ethical and legal responsibility in cases of medical errors caused by AI systems, opening a debate on the roles of healthcare professionals, technology developers, and institutions.
Universal Inaccessibility to AI: Finally, the session addressed the challenge of equity in accessing AI technologies, emphasizing how socioeconomic disparities can limit the benefits of these innovations to privileged groups.
The session concluded with an open dialogue, allowing attendees to reflect on the need to integrate solid ethical frameworks in the development and application of emerging technologies in healthcare.
The active participation and interest of the audience confirmed the relevance and urgency of these discussions in the current landscape of medicine and bioethics.
The Bioethics and Neuroethics Anáhuac Group (BINCA) has been carrying out academic activities focused on interdisciplinary discussion and research since October 2014. It is part of the Interdisciplinary Clinical Bioethics Project, which includes the faculties of Bioethics, Health Sciences, Education and Humanities, and Psychology at Universidad Anáhuac México.
