José Damián Carrillo Ruiz highlights the importance of critical reading in scientific articles

José Damián Carrillo Ruiz

During the Journal Club session, the founder of BINCA highlighted the value of thoroughly analyzing each section and promoting research skills in the attendees.

On November 12, 2024, Anahuac Clinical Bioethics and Neuroethics (BINCA) held its Journal Club session, with Dr. José Damián Carrillo Ruiz, founder of BINCA, as a special guest, who addressed relevant aspects on the importance of developing research skills and the correct interpretation of scientific articles.

During his speech, Dr. Carrillo stressed the importance of understanding each section of a scientific article, from the title and authors to the methodology, results and discussion. He pointed out that reading an article properly goes beyond simply understanding its content: "It involves questioning the premises of the study, analyzing the methodological rigor and evaluating the validity of the results." To exemplify this process, he broke down a scientific article, evaluating aspects such as the profile of the authors, their trajectory and the associated institutions, factors that influence the credibility of the study.

Subsequently, he reviewed the structure of the article, paying special attention to the theoretical framework, clarity in the presentation of the methods and the experimental design. One of the key points he addressed was the critical interpretation of the conclusions with a critical approach, stressing that it is essential to understand not only what the data shows, but also to consider possible omissions or implicit limitations. The review included a discussion of the context of the study and the impact it could have on the field of research.

This exercise not only broadened the participants' outlook in relation to reading articles, but also encouraged dialogue and reflection. Attendees were able to ask questions, addressing topics such as the interpretation of statistics, the relevance of conflicts of interest, and how to identify biases within a study.

At the close of the session, Dr. Carrillo Ruiz reiterated the relevance of participating in this type of academic activities, since they allow researchers in training to perfect their skills to navigate the vast and complex scientific literature.

This session of the Journal Club was a valuable opportunity for attendees to expand their knowledge and improve their competencies in critical reading of research, emphasizing the need to practice these skills as a fundamental part of their professional development.

This event reaffirmed BINCA's commitment to the training of researchers and the promotion of critical thinking in the scientific community.
