The CADEBI participates in the XIV International Congress of FELAIBE

“Mental Health and Palliative Care”

Members of the Anáhuac Center for Strategic Development in Bioethics presented various papers with the aim of promoting bioethical culture in Latin American institutions.

 

From October 25 to 27, 2023, the XIV Latin American Congress on Bioethics, themed "Mental Health and Palliative Care," was held at the Pontifical Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia. Members of the Anáhuac Center for Strategic Development in Bioethics (CADEBI) participated in this event.

 

Dr. Antonio Cabrera Cabrera, L.C., the director of CADEBI, contributed with his presentation titled "Disease, Human Multidimensionality, and the Concept of Total Pain in Palliative Care." He discussed the challenges of addressing the holistic nature of illness, emphasizing the need to move beyond technicalities and promote patient-centered healthcare.

Dr. Alejandro Sánchez Guerrero, the coordinator of engagement at the Center, moderated a panel discussion titled "Access to Mental Health Services: A Bioethical Challenge." The panel addressed topics such as mental health from a biopolitical perspective, access to mental health services in Latin America and the Caribbean, challenges in mental health from the field of psychiatry, and access to primary mental health care and its bioethical dilemmas.

 

Finally, Dr. David Cerdio Domínguez, the coordinator and secretary of the National Mexican Academy of Bioethics (ANMB) and a member of CADEBI, presented a paper titled "Undergraduate Education in Palliative Care." In his presentation, he reflected on the importance of equipping medical students with competencies focused on the comprehensive support of patients.
